SPECIAL REPORT: Drug-free ADHD treatment

LEWISBURG, WV (WVVA) Hearing your son or daughter may have attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder, depression, anxiety, or even obsessive compulsive disorder can be difficult.

For many people, the only solution seems to be to treat these problems with medicine or solely by counseling.

Now, there may be a new solution, and it doesn't even involve taking any drugs.

It involves brain mapping.

With sophisticated technology, therapists around the country are finding new ways to diagnose and treat not the symptoms, but the cause of certain disorders with the brain. We sat down with therapist Terry Lusher in Lewisburg to learn about the drug free therapy that he offers.

Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder is one of the most commonly known disorders in the United States. According to the National Resource Center on ADHD, in 2014, 8.8% or more than 5 million children were diagnosed with ADHD in the united states. Out of those children, 3.5 million or 69% of those diagnosed are treated with medication.

"It treats the symptoms. It doesn't treat the cause, you know and your brain becomes used to the medication,” says therapist Terry Lusher. “At some point it acclimates to that then you change the medication and use more medication or different medication and then we also have all the side effects that are associated with the medications."

Lewisburg therapist Terry Lusher says that medicine is not always the answer. Instead, he uses brain mapping and neurofeedback.

“Neurofeedback is a highly specialized type of biofeedback in which we train your brain. We help your brain self regulate. The brain mapping we utilize a qeeg, that's a quantitative electroencephalography and we obtain a map that shows me where your frequencies are as opposed to where they should be,” says Lusher.

Through the brain mapping, they can discover and treat many more issues than just ADHD.

“There are certain signatures for attention deficit disorder, anxiety, depression, OCD, post traumatic stress, I mean the different things we deal with. We can tell from that brain map what's going on with your brain. So there's no guesswork involved.”

By using the brain maps, Lusher is able to re-train your brain to self regulate.

“The research indicates that once your brain regulates and establishes a new normal, or in some cases goes back to normal, it remembers and it stays there,” says Lusher. “We've been using it for about 3 ½ years now and I'm finding that to be the case."

After learning about the brain mapping, I decided to go under the cap myself.

And the results we're very surprising to me.

“You can kind of see it right there that beta is very very low right there. And that part of your brain promotes flexibility, attention, reasonableness, calmness,” says Lusher. “Possible symptoms doesn't mean you have all of it but possible symptoms hyperactivity, restlessness your brain is restless. A tendency towards perfectionism.

From here Lusher says they would begin treating me by training my brain to create new habits.

"How much of a success rate have you seen?,” I asked Lusher.

“Very consistently. More so than any other one method of treatment that I've ever done,” says Lusher. “Very consistently i see success rates with a variety of problems. Whether it be anxiety, depression, kids with learning disorders and attention deficit type of behaviors and even things like we treat chronic headaches, cluster headaches, we treat migraines we have a pretty good success rate and even chronic pain issues.”

But the biggest shock of the treatment is the results after.

“I get a lot of people that are on medication and as we train they often find that they don't need that medication,” says Lusher.

The treatment essentially can make patients drug-free. Lusher says the success is because of one specific reason.

“This is more treating the cause and the medication is treating the symptom so as we treat the cause the symptoms aren't there anymore."

The brain mapping technology has been around since the 1970's, but because of technology restraints it has not been possible for local health care providers to have it until recent years.
