Downtown Beckley market predicted to quickly expand

BECKLEY, W.Va. -- Opening this Saturday, the bi-monthly Neville Street Market in Beckley's national historic district shows all signs of expanding beyond capacity by mid-June, according to organizers .Shoppers from Ohio, Virginia, and West Virginia are expected to attend the retail street-fair, which the city will accommodate by rerouting downtown traffic on the first and third Saturdays of each month through September.

The upcoming market will give organizers and participants a clear view of the market's potential, says Sasha Cantley, an owner of Tickety Boo Mercantile, which has partnered with the city on the project."Many people will wait on this first event to determine how they'll participate in the future," Cantley said, "but given the spectacle,we're expecting a significant response."Jill Moorefield, Beckley's Director of Events, underscored the market's festival atmosphere as a draw."Because the city is blocking off part of the street and because other venues such as live entertainment are planned, the market is taking on a much more festive air than an ordinary market," she said.

The owners of the Raleigh Playhouse & Theatre at 403 Neville Street are coordinating a series of short movies for children, and musician sand other entertainers will be performing on Neville in the bandstand at Word Park.Jim Chambers, a spokesperson for the Downtown Beckley Business Association, said the market accomplishes much as it draws people into the city's national historic district."Not only does it create a venue for the merchants who will be setting up displays, it creates a venue for merchants and property owners who stand to gain much from the foot traffic," Chambers said. The market this Saturday will run from 8 a..m. until 1 p.m.
