BECKLEY (WVVA) -

A Beckley police office looking for distracted drivers makes a routine traffic stop, which turns into a police chase on the road and then on foot.

Derrick Mitchell, 26, of Beckley is facing five charges including fleeing from an officer in a vehicle with reckless indifference and possession of marijuana.

According to the criminal complaint, Beckley Police Officer W.L. Gravely pulled over Mitchell Saturday afternoon for using his cell phone while driving.

When the officer went to walk up to his car, he says Mitchell took off.

The complaint says he ignored several stop signs and had no regard for traffic.

The chase ended behind an apartment complex when he ran on foot.

Once caught, Mitchell told Officer Gravely that he fled because he had 25 grams of marijuana on him.

This is also his third offense of driving with a suspended license.

He is being held in Southern Regional Jail on a $10,000 bond.
