Firefighters battle brush fire in Bland County - WVVA TV Bluefield Beckley WV News, Weather and Sports

UPDATE: Crews have contained the brush fire along Interstate 77 at mile marker 60. Firefighters are still on the scene this evening to ensure no flare-ups spark another fire. A Virginia Department of Forestry helicopter was called in to drop water, but crews were able to contain the flames on their own.

According to crew members at the fire scene, one firefighter was transported to receive medical care due to smoke inhalation.  A hay barn was destroyed as a result of the fire.

A brush fire in Bland County has firefighters busy as the flames spread to a hay barn. The fire is near mile marker 60 near Bastian on Interstate 77.

The right lane of I-77 South was closed but traffic was still moving southbound. Firefighters say these extremely windy conditions contributed to the fire spreading so quickly. The region is currently under a Red Flag warning for an increase risk of fires.

Several fire departments continue to work the scene.

The cause of the fire is unknown.
