Thousands gather in Charleston to protest several proposals

CHARLESTON (WVVA)- Thousands of protesters gathered at The West Virginia State Capitol in Charleston to protest republican legislature.

National union figures protested several proposals they say are bad for workers. They oppose changes to the prevailing wage for construction projects and a scale-back of mine safety laws.

“Many of the laws they are trying to pass are a tax on workers. They're trying to lower our wages. They're trying to destroy our unions,” says one male protestor.

They're fighting the introduction of charter schools, repeal of Common Core educational standards and alternative teacher certification programs like Teach for America.

A teacher protesting says, “For somebody to be able to come in and teach children that doesn't have the experience that I have, it just really is not right.”

The GOP has said the agenda offers new direction for a dismally performing educational system, while benefiting the economy.
