Man dies when car is swept away in flood waters in Buchanan County

BUCHANAN COUNTY, VA (WVVA)  Emergency workers recover the body of a man who was swept away in flood waters in Buchanan County. 

According to the Virginia State Police, around 11 p.m. Wednesday night, two people were traveling in a 2007 Chevrolet Impala along Helen Henderson Highway in the Davenport area when the they attempted to drive though a flooding on the highway. The car began to float. The driver was able to escape the vehicle, but the passenger was swept away along with the car into the Russell Fork River. 

Officers with the Buchanan County Sheriff's Office and the Virginia State Police Search and Recovery Team attempted to locate the vehicle and passenger overnight. On Thursday morning, the water receded and divers were able to find the car. Due to the swift current, they were not able to get to the vehicle until 5 p.m. The missing passenger, Randy O'Quinn, 60, of Haysi, Virginia was found deceased in the vehicle. 

The car was pulled from the river. O'Quinn's body has been sent to the Office of the Medical Examiner for autopsy.
