Southern West Virginia Area McDonald's awards $2,500 to local schools


Beckley, W.Va. - McDonald's of Southern West Virginia and Southwest Virginia will be awarding Balanced, Active Lifestyles (BAL) Grants this month. Five recipients were chosen from eligible applications that focused on educating students about physical fitness and health education in unique ways. The program is sponsored by local McDonald's owner/operators in Southern West Virginia and Southwest Virginia.

Each school developed a program to promote health education or physical fitness for students in grades 5, 6, 7, and/or 8. Applications were completed by teachers, principals, or administrators employed by a school in an eligible county. Counties eligible included: Fayette, Greenbrier, McDowell, Mercer, Monroe, Raleigh, Summers, and Wyoming in West Virginia and Tazewell county in Virginia.

Applications were judged on creativity, educational content, and program cost effectiveness. Recipients included:

Bluewell Elementary School Bluewell  - Bears Bearing Nutrition - Bluefield, WV

Brushfork Elementary School  - Brushfork Bengals Busting Nutrition - Bluefield, WV

Independence Middle School -  Dance Fit - Coal City, WV

Shady Spring Elementary School -  Wii Exercise - Shady Spring, WV

Trap Hill Middle School  - McYoga - We're Loving It - Glen Daniel, WV

With the sixth year of the Balanced, Active Lifestyles Grants being awarded, McDonald's Owner/Operators are reminded of the significance of supporting the program. Myra Harper, Owner/Operator of McDonald's in Beckley, said, “This program is incredibly important. It's not just what we eat but also about living an active life and finding balance in everything we do. As owner-operators, we are thrilled to support all aspects of the Balanced, Active Lifestyles Grant.”
