Pastor Ron Browning 68, was killed at his home on Odessa Avenue in Beckley over the weekend. Pastor Ron Browning 68, was killed at his home on Odessa Avenue in Beckley over the weekend.

UPDATE: Police are charging Camille Brown in the death of Ron Browning on Saturday.

Browning's body was discovered by his wife outside his home on Odessa Avenue on Saturday. On the same day, just half a mile away, Mabscott police arrested Camile Brown on separate Breaking and Entering charges.

According to court documents, Brown later confessed to officers that she killed a man with gray hair earlier in the day. She told police it happened near her home on Westwood Drive, which runs parallel to the street where Browning was found dead.

Browning worked as a chaplain and volunteer at Raleigh General Hospital.

"I was devastated, in disbelief. But it happened. And I didn't want to believe it. He had a way of knowing if you were feeling bad and always tried to make you feel better," said Debbie Peyton, Director of Volunteers at Raleigh General Hospital.

On Monday, Browning's co-workers honored his life by placing a wreath in the main foyer.
Beckley Police say Pastor Ron Browning, 68, was murdered at his home on Odessa Avenue. Police say his new wife found his body.

"Until he is examined by the medical examiner, I wouldn't want to speculate on the exact cause of death or the manner, but it does appear it was an assault, a physical assault played a part," Detective Morgan Bragg said.

Thomas McMillion says he has known Browning since he was in diapers. He says Browning was a preacher, volunteer at Raleigh General Hospital, and even used to be a troop leader for Boy Scouts.

McMillion says he can't imagine anyone hurting the man he called a second father. "He was just a great person. He never done nobody wrong, he'd give you the shirt off his back. To hear of such things that's happened, it's a little bit scary."

Detective Morgan Bragg says they believe the murder happened Saturday morning. He says they found a weapon believed to have been used and have a suspect.

"Through processing the scene and other events that occurred through the night, we've identified a suspect in this case," said Bragg.  "At this time we don't know of any connection between the suspect and the victim. By all indications this appears to have been a random event perpetuated by the suspect. They are in custody on other unrelated charges."

Detective Bragg says he hopes to issue a warrant for first degree murder within the next few days.
