Mercer County fire said to be arson; man accused of starting it arrested

MERCER COUNTY (WVVA)- One man is behind bars after starting an illegal burn and destroying nearly $100,000 worth of property, this according to firefighters.

Gregory Powers, 39, is behind bars, charged with starting a fire on the land of another, failure to extinguish a fire and prohibited fire.

Trooper John Tupper with WV State Police in Princeton made the arrest.

Captain David Thompson with the Green Valley-Glenwood Fire Department says Powers started a fire on Ceres Hollow Road around 1:30 Saturday afternoon.

According to Captain Thompson the fire destroyed a six car garage as well as a single car. It took firefighters three and a half hours to battle the flames.

"The wind was in prime condition to go to where it needed to go. That's why we tell people to be aware of what you're burning and watch the weather. And that's the biggest thing we try and tell people. You're just an out building away from going to jail," says Thompson.

Green Valley-Glenwood Fire Department, East River Fire Department and Bluewell Fire Department all responded.
