SunCoke idling mines in Buchanan County

BUCHANAN COUNTY, VA (WVVA) SunCoke Energy idles one mine in Buchanan County, has plans to idle two more in February.

According to a company news release, the Dominion 30 mine is being idled immediately. The Dominion 7 and Dominion 34 mines will be idled next month..

SunCoke officials say its part of the company's plan to downsize its Jewell coal mining operations.

"About 150 employees will be affected by these operational changes, including some administrative and support staff. The mining contractors are hosting a job fair tomorrow and it's possible that many of our affected employees will be hired," says Steve Carlson, Manager, Financial & Corporate Communications, Suncoke Energy.

SunCoke is evaluating the use of third-party suppliers to handle coal washing operations.

"It's always difficult to make decisions that directly impact our employees. We commend the coal team for their commitment through this process and hold them and their work in the highest regard. Employees were notified of these changes during company meetings held today," says Carlson.

Rep. Morgan Griffith released the following statement on SunCoke Energy's downsizing plan:

“In less than two months' time, SunCoke has reduced its workforce in Southwest Virginia by 325 employees. These are jobs that are badly needed by hardworking Americans, their families, and their communities. I am very saddened by this announcement – my heart goes out to those miners losing their jobs, and to their families as well. For those impacted by these layoffs, I encourage you to contact my Abingdon office to receive a resource packet.," says Rep. Morgan Griffith (R), 9th District.
