Alderson group looks to open non-profit grocery store

"The Alderson Community Food Hub was started back in 2011 as a weekly market here in Alderson. And our mission is connect local producers and consumers of all kinds," explained Kevin Johnson, the President of the Board of Directors for the food hub.

Now the organization wants to create its own non-profit grocery store. The group made the decision after the only grocery store in town, I.G.A., closed for good in November.

Johnson says there are a lot of positives that will come with what they are trying to do.

"We accept EBT and this community is heavily dependent on EBT. We're supporting local producers and helping bring vitality back to the town."

Their Alderson Green Grocer Community Co-op store already exists in the same building as the Wolf Creek Gallery.

However the gallery is moving out, so the grocery store can move in.

There will be a cafe where they hope to sell things like coffee, sandwiches and soups. They also want to have a deli and local produce along with other grocery items.

But transforming this space is serving up big costs.

"What we're hoping to raise is $30,000 by mid-March so that we can complete this transformation," said Johnson. "And that includes a lot of hardware we don't have, like shelving for different kinds of products. Coolers, an open produce cooler, freezers, as well as coolers for meats and cheeses."

The hope is to open in March with whatever items they have and continue building from there.

If you'd like to help support the non-profit grocery store, they are always looking for volunteer labor.

And you can also donate to their crowdfunding page.
