West Virginia Senate passes energy act repeal unopposed

CHARLESTON, WV (AP) - The Republican-run state Senate has passed a repeal of an energy portfolio.

The Senate voted 33-0 Wednesday to repeal the Alternative and Renewable Energy Portfolio Standard. One senator was absent.

The portfolio requires generating 25 percent of electricity with renewable or alternative power sources by 2025. More efficient coal-burning technologies qualify, like a Morgantown coal power plant.

Last week, FirstEnergy official Sammy Gray said his company could comply with the requirements without increased costs, lost jobs, higher rates or business plan changes.

The state Coal Association helped write the standard. Now, it says it supports repeal amid increased federal regulations and legal impacts on the industry.

Lawmakers rejected a Democratic amendment requiring the legislative auditor's economic analysis of the repeal in July 2016.

The House expects its repeal vote Thursday.
