Watch out for "secret shopper" employment scams

CHARLESTON, WV (AP) - West Virginians are being urged to be on the lookout for fake job postings and other online employment scams during the holiday season.

Attorney General Patrick Morrisey's office says the holiday season is ripe for these scams because many people take on additional jobs.

In a common "secret shopper" scam, people are told to deposit a check they're mailed and use it to buy something at a designated store. The secret shopper is then told to rate their shopping experience and return any of the money they didn't' spend. In some situations, the initial check is not legitimate, meaning the person is out of the money they spent.

In other job scams, applicants may be asked to pay for training that never takes place or provide personal and financial information.
