BLUEFIELD, WV (WVVA) The City of Bluefield hopes to give its brand a fresh look with a new logo.

According to Assistant City Manager Joshua Cline, "the city's brand is broken, can be perceived as stuffy, and reminiscent of past problems. A fresh look needed to be presented to the Board of Directors to reflect the desired change in environment and new city leadership."

Cline says the new logo was voted on "by citizens via the City of Bluefield Mindmixer page and hard copies placed at the Chamber of Commerce and Rec Center." There were three potential logos to chose from.

The new logo, designed by graphic design artist Jeff Sheppard, is being added to business cards, letterhead, and vehicle decals. The design reflects the name of the City, its rich railroad history, and identity as "Nature's Air-Conditioned City." Cline says the color blue also symbolizes "confidence, consciousness, depth, faith, intellect, intelligence, loyalty, stability, trust, truth, and wisdom." The color green represents the nature around Bluefield and "symbolizes endurance, fertility, freshness, growth, harmony, and safety."

To further describe the logo, Cline used a quote taken from a book about Bluefield from late local historian Dr. Stuart McGhee:

“The location of the division's mechanical shops was determined because of the natural gravity “hump” creating the highest point on what had previously been the Norfolk & Western mainline. Railroaders used gravity to help collect eastbound coal cars into unit trains. In the early days, coal cars were “draped” over the hump and sent eastward in trains of 100 or more cars.”

The Great Seal of the City of Bluefield will only be used for official business.
