Wyoming Co. man admits to murdering school bus driver during home robbery

WYOMING COUNTY (WVVA) A Wyoming County man pleads guilty to first degree murder.

John New, 22, of Briar Creek, was arrested in February 2013 for the murder of Elaine Birchfield, a bus driver for Wyoming County Schools. According to police, New was inside her Mill Creek residence on February 12 and killed Birchfield when she returned home. They say New fled in her SUV.

He was arrested on one day later in the Gilbert area of Mingo County.

As a result of a plea deal with prosecutors, additional charges of grand larceny and daytime robbery were dropped against New.

He was sentenced to life in prison without mercy.
