Suicide prevention walk draws big crowd

BLUEFIELD (WVVA) - Saturday's scattered storms aren't stopping one group from raising awareness about suicide prevention.

It was the fifth annual "Out of the Darkness" walk at Bluefield City Park.

Dozens of people showed up, including our own WVVA team, to give their support.

While the start was delayed due to rain, the skies opened up to let the walk commence.

Pastor and keynote speaker at the walk, Doug McDaniel, says that's a perfect analogy for this walk -- the skies won't stay dark forever.

"Life is absolutely worth living,” he says. “Sometimes we just have to exhale. Sometimes we just have to take a deep breath and take another step. And if we wait just a minute -- I know sometimes its dark, but if we wait just a minute, often times the clouds clear and there is a ray of sunshine that shows up."

The organizers hope to slowly break down the stigma associated with depression and suicide.

They encourage anyone with those thoughts to speak up and seek help.
