BECKLEY (WVVA) The University of Charleston is starting a new nursing program at its campus in Beckley.

Classes for the newly created Associate Degree in Nursing begin on Friday. A welcome event planned for Saturday has been postponed. Officials say it will be held sometime next month.

"We know that more nurses are going to be needed to address the impending nurse shortage, and we are proud to help address this need," says UC Beckley President Jerry Forster.

There are a total of 15 students in the inaugural class. Forster says another 15 students will be added to the program in the spring.

The Associate Degree in Nursing will allow students to become a registered nurse (RN) in 16 months. Students can then chose to continue their education online with UC to earn a Bachelor of Nursing degree.
