 MERCER COUNTY (WVVA)- Volunteer firefighters throughout Mercer County are asking for the public's help during their time of need. 

Fire chiefs throughout the county say they are in a financial bind.

According to Matoaka Fire Chief, Steven Sommers the fire fee, also the department's budget money, hasn't been increased in nearly 23 years. He goes on to say while that number has stayed the same, "our cost of operating increases every day. We don't have the money to meet those costs."

In order to help curb the problem, the departments are requesting an increase in the fire fee. That money would help pay for gear, routine work on the fire trucks, and the list goes on.

The Mercer County Commission will hold a series of Public Meetings to solicit citizen's comments regarding a proposal to increase fire fees in Mercer County. Fire chiefs will also present a power point explaining why the need is so great.

The meetings will be held at the following locations on the following dates:

Bluewell VFD September   4, 2014 6:30 p.m.

Matoaka VFD September   9, 2014 6:30 p.m.

Green Valley-Glenwood VFD September 11, 2014 6:30 p.m.

Oakvale VFD September 16, 2014 6:30 p.m.

Athens VFD September 23, 2014 6:30 p.m.

Mercer County Courthouse October  7, 2014 6:30 p.m.

This fire fee increase will not affect any structures within the City of Bluefield or the City of Princeton.
