Tazewell County Shelter moves closer to "no kill" goal

TAZEWELL COUNTY (WVVA) The Tazewell County Animal Shelter Board has unanimously approved a new mission statement:

‘It is the mission and goal of the Tazewell County Animal Shelter to provide care and humane treatment for the lost, surrendered and confiscated animals of Tazewell County until such time as they are returned to their rightful homes or a new home is found for them with euthanasia as a last resort and the ultimate goal of becoming a “no kill' shelter'.

During a free adoption month held this past July, 137 dogs, puppies, cats, and kittens found new homes. Eleven additional animals went to Rescue operations in search of permanent homes.

Board members plan to construct a new, larger shelter in the future. A location for the new shelter has been selected. Now they are working on getting the finances to build it. Board members also hope to add new programs to educate pet owners on the importance of spaying and neutering their animals.

The current shelter is located at 3015 Lynn Hollow Road. The hours of operation are Tuesday through Saturday from noon to 5 p.m. Adoption fees for dogs are $25 and cat adoptions are free of charge. If you adopt an animal, you must sign a contract to have the pet spayed r neutered.

Donations to the Tazewell County Animal Shelter can be sent to: 108 East Main Street, Tazewell, VA 24651 or taken directly to the shelter. For more information, call 276-988-5795.
