Republican Chafin wins Virginia Senate seat

Ben Chafin Ben Chafin

Republican Ben Chafin will be the next to represent Virginia's 38th District in the state Senate.  Chafin captured nearly 60% of the vote, beating out Democrat Mike Hymes (32%) and Independent Rick Mullins (8%).  Proving the district has made a shift to Republican, Chafin won all counties and cities in the 38th District with the exception of Dickenson, where unofficial results show Chafin being narrowly bested by Mullins who is from Dickenson County.  Hymes, of Tazewell County, only pulled in about 33% of the voters in his home county.   Chafin easily won his home county of Russell with 64% of the vote.  Once Chafin's victory is confirmed, Republicans will control 21 seats in the Senate compared to the Democrats' 19.  Republicans have overwhelming control of the state House.
