Victims in Fatal Fire Speak Out

Soak Creek (WVVA) What started out as suspicious trailer fires Monday morning is now being investigated as a homicide.

Carl Cox was arrested on Monday on two counts of First Degree Arson after the body of David Davis was discovered in one of the homes.

An autopsy by the state medical examiner on Tuesday revealed soot in Davis' lungs, indicating he was still alive at the time of the blaze. Now, Cox is facing a first degree murder charge as well.

But while Davis did not live to tell his story, the neighbors who lost their home in the blaze did. James and Melissa Jarrell said they woke up to a strange noise on Monday morning.

"My cat jumped up in the window. I saw orange and thought, I must be dreaming." But it was not a dream. James Jarrell's house was on fire and he knew he had to move quickly to get his wife, Melissa, and daughter, 8, out.

"Basically, I worked my whole life and I have nothing now, nothing at all for her." said Jarrell.

Melissa Jarrell said she would appreciate any donations of clothes, food, or other house items. Their daughter also lost all of her back-to-school clothes and would appreciate any size 10-12 clothes.
