'Target Red' continues through weekend

BECKLEY (WVVA) -- The end of a campaign that monitors traffic violations at troubled intersections is approaching, but that's not stopping police from cracking down.

Target Red is an effort to catch more people who run red lights and stop signs, especially in areas with high crash rates.  Any other infractions observed are cited as well.  The effort started August 1 by the Southern Regional Highway Safety Program in West Virginia.

Police are trying to cut down on the number of accidents.

"Whether it be county routes, state routes, whatever it is, any way we can make the roads safer, that's the goal," says Deputy Chris Fitzwater with the Fayette County Sheriff's Office.

Fitzwater says punishment for traffic violations can range anywhere from a fine to jail time.

Target Red runs through Sunday, August 17.
