Mother of Suspect Testifies in Raleigh County Murder Trial

Beckley (WVVA) -- Testimony continues in the trial of Donald Dunn, the Stanaford man accused of killing his step-father and attempting to kill his mother.

The defense called several of Dunn's friends and family members to the stand on Tuesday, including his mother, Johanna McDermott.

McDermott spoke of her son's difficult childhood and trouble at school, but maintained what the defense has argued from the beginning, that the murder of Mark McDermott was out of character for Dunn.

She also offered details on the chain of events leading to her husband's murder, recalling a look in her son's eyes she had never seen before. "His eyes were black and beady. There, for a moment, if I didn't recognize his clothes, I wouldn't have recognized him."

With a confession already on record, the hope now for Dunn's defense team is a guilty verdict with mercy, so that Dunn may be spared a life in prison.

Dunn is expected to take the stand on Wednesday.
