BECKLEY (WVVA) -- The trial continues for a man accused of first degree murder of his stepfather, Mark McDermott, and attempted first degree murder of his mother, Johanna McDermott.

Friday was day two of West Virginia v. Donald Dunn.  The state began, calling West Virginia State Trooper Jonathan Gross to the stand.  At the time, Gross was the sheriff's deputy who responded to the 911 call of the murder.

Gross sat in on Dunn's initial police interview, conducted by Raleigh County Sheriff's Detective Brian Stump, the prosecution's next witness.

During that interview, Donald Dunn told police he was in the tub at the time of Mark McDermott's murder, and that his mother pulled the trigger.  He denied having a gun at any time during the day of the murder in May 2013.

In Johanna McDermott's initial police interview, she told police, when she arrived home the day of the murder, Dunn told her he had something to give to her; she should sit down and close her eyes.  That's when he allegedly pointed a gun at Johanna, but the gun misfired.

After some conversation, Johanna suggested to Donald that she would take the blame for Mark's death.  That was their story when they called 9-1-1.  During the police interview though, she changed her mind -- telling investigators, her son needed help.

Other witnesses Friday included the lead investigator, Detective Corey Suman.  Suman spoke briefly about the murder-suicide note Dunn had written apparently framing his mother.

Also, forensic specialist Nicole MacEwan stated she found gun shot residue on Donald Dunn's samplings and none on Johanna McDermott's.

The trial will continue Monday, scheduled from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Beckley (WVVA) -- It was a stirring day of testimony as day one of the Donald Dunn murder trial wrapped up in Beckley on Thursday.

Dunn is accused of killing his step-father, Mark McDermott, and attempting to kill his mother, Johanna McDermott.

On the morning of May 25th, 2013, Prosecutor Kristen Keller said friends and family were getting ready for Donald Dunn's graduation from Marshall University. What started out as a day of joy; however, quickly turned to tragedy.

Instead of confronting his parents with the truth about dropping out of college, Keller said Dunn staged a murder-suicide that hit a snag when a bullet intended for Dunn's mother got stuck.

Johanna McDermott's life was spared and Keller said Dunn was then forced to come up with a new story: convincing his mother to confess to 911 operators.

"But once we got them separated, though, and I had her in my car, it was a totally different story," said Roger Bircham with the Raleigh County Sheriff's Dept. He was the officer charged with watching McDermott after arriving on scene.
During Dunn's questioning at the Raleigh County Sheriff's Department, Capt. Jim Bare informed him that his mother was no longer sticking with the story, At that point, Keller said Dunn confessed.

Later, Dunn's defense team is expected to make the case that Dunn was in an altered state of mind the day of the killing. He is hoping to be spared a life in prison.
