First Day of School in Mercer County

MERCER COUNTY (WVVA)- Students in Mercer County packed up their back packs on Thursday and headed into school for the first day.

From smiling faces to some with tears, there were an array of emotions being expressed.

Rhynell Coatney dropped his son off for his first day of kindergarten. He says, "I was just wiping his nose and now he's in school. It's just overwhelming a little bit."

"I was actually pretty sad that she was going to school, but she was actually really happy to get here," says Brandon Cleary who dropped his second grade daughter off at Princeton Primary this morning.

As the school year kicks off,  police in Mercer County want to remind drivers to stay alert and watch for children getting on and off the buses.

Detective K.L. Adams with the Bluefield, WV Police department says, "A lot of people are trying to text message people. A lot of people are talking on the phones. We see it all the time. So, you need to watch that. You need to be more careful, be more alert with all the kids out on the road ways."

The speed limit in a school zone when lights are flashing is 15 mph.
