Sheriff Hieatt named top D.A.R.E. administrator

TAZEWELL COUNTY (WVVA) - Tazewell County Sheriff Brian Hieatt has been named the top D.A.R.E. administrator in Virginia for 2014.

He received the Gary B. Payne D.A.R.E. award for demonstrating a high degree of commitment to the program in the Tazewell community. The award ceremony was held at the annual Virginia D.A.R.E. Conference in Hampton, VA on August 5.

Sheriff Hieatt was a DARE instructor for Tazewell County in the 1990's. The current DARE officer, Deputy Glen Keen, was actually one of Hieatt's students.

"Having Sheriff Hieatt as a DARE Instructor in elementary school gave me someone to model myself after, he has had a dramatic impact on my life and that is what I hope to accomplish as our current DARE Officer. It was  a dream of mine to become a Police Officer and with encouragement from Sheriff Hieatt throughout my school years I was able to make that dream a reality and now I get to follow in his footsteps as a DARE Instructor," says Deputy Glen Keen.

Sheriff Hieatt oversees the department's anti-drug program and continues to attend training in the Drug Abuse Resistance Education Program.
