Man jailed after altercation with deputies in McDowell County

NORTHFORK (WVVA) - A man is jailed on multiple charges after an altercation with a McDowell County deputy.

Sheriff Martin West says Joseph Braggs of Northfork was arrested after threatening police officers, who responded to a call about a domestic dispute Braggs was involved in at his home.

During the arrest, he became combative says West. He tells WVVA that Braggs put his hand on a knife in his belt, claiming he was not going to go to jail. After a scuffle, he did drop the knife, but he also kicked and broke the glass in the deputy's cruiser. The damage is valued at less than $250.

Braggs was arraigned Thursday before a McDowell County magistrate and placed on a $5000 bond. He is charged with domestic assault and battery, assault and battery on a police officer, brandishing a deadly weapon, resisting arrest, and destruction of property.

During the incident the deputy did point his revolver at Braggs, but did not shoot.
