McNeill Fires 61 Despite Family Crisis

Posted:
WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. (WVVA) -- George McNeill's mind was anywhere but The Old White TPC Sunday at the 2014 Greenbrier Classic and yet, he played like he was locked in and totally focused on golf. Not bad for a guy who's going a family ordeal that shines proper prospective on the 'game' of golf.

McNeill's sister Michelle battled breast cancer and a brain tumor for the better part of two years. After all the tests, treatments and tears, her battle and fight is over. Now, she's fighting for time and her terminal prognosis ran through McNeill's mind all week long.

"My mind was elsewhere, even when I made a few birdies," said McNeill. "I didn't think a whole lot about it. I was just going out there with the perspective of trying to play some golf."

His final round Sunday was a thing to behold - especially the front nine. He birdies holes 4, 5, 6 and 7 before flighting a ball softly into number 8's green and watching the ball trickle and fall into the cup for a hole-in-one.

"Four birdies in a row and a hole in one. That doesn't hurt any round," said McNeill. "I was pretty fortunate to keep it together and make a few birdies coming in."

McNeill finished in second and secured a spot in the 2014 British Open at Royal Liverpool in two weeks time.
