Fayette County woman pleads guilty to mail fraud

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- A former employee of the Fayette County Sheriff's Department is facing up to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to mail fraud.
Federal prosecutors say 44-year old Cheryl Gray of Hilltop appeared Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Charleston.
Gray's job was to collect application fees for concealed weapon permits, record fees paid, and transmit a list to the West Virginia State Police of permits issued each month.
Authorities say that for six months Gray kept cash payments for permits and failed to record the names of persons who paid cash on the report. To disguise her theft, Gray created a false set of receipt books.
The fraud resulted in losses of about $40,000.
Sentencing is scheduled for Sept. 23.
