'The Best of West Virginia' honors the state's 151st birthday

BECKLEY (WVVA) -- At a place that's all things West Virginia every day, Tamarack pulled out the stops for West Virginia Day 2014.

The holiday was celebrated for West Virginia's 151st birthday.  The state is the only one to be born out of a war.  At the end of the Civil War West Virginia split ties with its now neighboring state, Virginia.  Tamarack employee, Stephen Cassle, portrayed Confederate General Stonewall Jackson to an audience, before they cut the West Virginia birthday cake.
"I think the importance for me is to be able to each who the man really was, beyond the war, beyond the uniform, and what it meant for him to grow up in this region, what people meant to him in this region," says Cassle.

Other special guests for the tourist destination's birthday bash for the mountain state were the southern West Virginia bluegrass group, the Songcatchers, and Fayetteville artist, Ginger Danz.

"I'm always blown away, every year at the level of talent that we have in West Virginia," says Danz.  "I mean, I already know it, but to see it, and the people are really down to earth, so they're great, amazing artists, but they're also just friendly wonderful people, so you can't beat that."

West Virginia Day celebrations will continue all weekend at Tamarack.
