Trooper struck by vehicle on I-77 near Athens

ATHENS (WVVA) - A trooper is recovering Thursday after being hit by a vehicle while parked along the Interstate.

According to West Virginia State Police the incident happened near the Athens exit in Mercer County.

Lieutenant Michael Baylous says Trooper First Class D.R. White was struck by a vehicle while attempting to remove a gas can from the roadway

Baylous said White was apparently struck by the passenger side mirror on the vehicle, and had to crawl across the roadway to get back to his cruiser.

The driver of the vehicle did not stop to help White. It's unclear if the vehicle slowed down after striking the trooper.

Baylous said White was following protocol by keeping his cruiser's blue and red lights flashing.

White was treated and released from an area hospital this morning with back injuries, but is still suffering from general soreness.

No description of the vehicle was available. If you have any information about this hit-and-run call the West Virginia State Police.
