OAK HILL (WVVA) -- A Fayette County man is behind bars after police say he brutally assaulted a woman in Oak Hill.

Thomas Carter Jr., 47, was arrested and charged with felony kidnapping, first degree sexual assault and first degree robbery.

According to officials, a woman was on the Rails-to-Trails path in the Allman Street area Saturday evening.  She was attacked from behind by a man wearing a mask and gloves, said to be Carter.  He reportedly dragged her into a wooded area off the trail, tied her up, gagged her and used a knife to cut off her clothes.

Once her left the victim, she was able to free herself and run to a house for help.

Capt. Jim Sizemore with the Fayette County Sheriff's Office attributes law enforcement's quick arrest of Carter to the victim's specific description of her alleged attacker.
