Copper theft at Athens School under investigation

ATHENS (WVVA) - Mercer County Sheriff's deputies are investigating the theft of copper pipes from a county elementary school.

Sr. Dep. D.A. Furchess says approximately 50 feet of copper has been stolen from Athens School sometime over the past month.

The discovery was made when crews were performing maintenance on the school's boiler system.

The damage totaled approximately $1,200. A fire extinguisher was also missing from the school.

Police say there was no noticeable tampering to the locks.

Concord University Police are assisting in the investigation.
