Current, former Greenbrier Co. commissioners accused of misusing funds

GREENBRIER COUNTY (WVVA) - A current and former Greenbrier County Commissioner have been charged with the misappropriation of the county’s hotel occupancy tax.

Karen Lobban, who lost the May primary election and is currently finishing out her term, and Betty Crookshanks, who lost the 2012 election are both accused of "willingly, knowingly, unlawfully and willfully" trying to use $1.3 million for a pool at the New River Community and Technical College Foundation.

The tax is only for property owned by the county, which the school is not.

The charge is a misdemeanor and will only carry a $100 penalty if they are found guilty.

The special prosecutor brought in for their case, Gene Simmons from Pocahontas County, says that regardless of the penalty, these indictments send a message to the public that you cannot do this.
