Courageous Fathers service planned at Martha Moore Park in Welch

WELCH (WVVA) - A Courageous Father's service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 15. The service will be held at Martha Moore River Front Park in Welch.

The service is to recognize the importance of a father's influence on his children and to encourage fathers to stay in their children's lives. Gary Police Chief S. P. McKinney says in a news release that hie was inspired to hold the service by the movie "Courageous," in which a Deputy Sheriff loses one child and turns to the church. He inspires his coworkers and they take a pledge to be good fathers to their children. Copies of that pledge will be at the service for fathers to sign and take home.

McKinney says, "The absence of a positive father, or in some cases any father at all, contributes heavily to troubled youth and later troubled adults. Over two thirds of America's prison population did not have a father's influence according to studies. This is our effort to bring forth the fathers of McDowell County and encourage them to be there for their children."

Speakers at the service include McKinney, Pastor Scott Long of North Welch Church of God, Pastor Johnny Gail Pennington of the Roderfield Christian Church, and Pastor Dan Pruitt of the Trinity Church. They encourage the public, especially fathers, to attend the free service.
