BLUEFIELD (WVVA) - Police have obtained a warrant for the arrest of a Bluefield man who they say is responsible for the death of his newborn son.

Det. K.L. Adams with the Bluefield P.D. says 7-week-old Ethan Byrd died as a result of a blow to the head delivered by his father, Cassidy Byrd.

Byrd is now wanted on a charge of death of a child as a result of child abuse by a parent, guardian or custodian. If convicted, he could be sentenced to 10-40 years behind bars.

According to a previous report, Byrd called 911 on April 5 from the Edgemont Drive home the family was living in. He told dispatchers the child was having trouble breathing.

The baby was taken to Bluefield Regional Medical Center but was declared dead on arrival. An autopsy confirmed trauma to the head as the cause of death.

Adams says Byrd has not shown up at his home or workplace in several days that police know of. Police ask the community to share any information that may help them locate Byrd.

The baby's mother, Ashley Owens, who is on probation for child neglect resulting in injury stemming from a separate incident several years ago will not be charged. Police say she was not involved in this child's death.
