Old Iaeger Elementary school demo'd as plans for new school continue

IAEGER, W. Va (WVVA)-- An old McDowell County school is being demolished, but as it goes down, a new project begins.

We're told it will usher in a fresh start for Iaeger Elementary students and staff.

If you recall, students were moved to Bradshaw Elementary and River View High School after part of the Iaeger Elementary parking lot slid into the Tug River last December.

Superintendent Nelson Spencer said in an interview that this old building had to go because of safety concerns like leaks, coal dust, and a general state of disrepair.

As crews knock down what's left of the old school, former students and staff are taking time to reflect on its better days. Some even come to the old site, looking for momentos.

We caught up with Eddie Lester, a former Iaeger student who lives near the old building. Every morning since he moved there, he has awakened to a view of the old and out-dated building. But that's changing by the day.

"Its exciting to see that it's actually going [down]," he told WVVA. "It's extremely old. It feels like it's been here forever."

Superintendent Spencer said although it may be sad to see it go, it makes way for even more exciting changes.

"It's one of the first steps to building our new school," he said. "This had to happen before we could do that."
He said the new school, built on a new site just yards away from the old school, will be the state-of-the-art facility the students deserve. The old school's demolition is part of that project, which has been in the works for several years now. The mountainside at the site has been blasted, and the lot cleared to allow groundbreaking soon.

Although we're not sure when that will be, we do know crews need to wait until the old school is gone. Its lot will become a play area for students, after the slide is repaired.
