Shining a Light on Sudden Infant Death Syndrome

Beckley (WVVA) The death of a child can shatter a parent's world, especially when it comes out of nowhere. As part of Infant Sleep Safety Awareness Month, WVVA is shining a light on Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. It happens when a healthy baby dies in his or her sleep, suddenly and without medical explanation, but nurses say it is preventable. According to nurse Paula Hickok, co-sleeping is a leading cause of the syndrome and one of the biggest mistakes a new parent can make. "Probably putting...More >>

GREENBRIER COUNTY (WVVA ) - The Peyton Hospice House is now open. The new eight-bed in-patient facility is located near the West Virginia fairgrounds in Greenbrier County.

As you may know, hospice care provides a home for patients with terminal illnesses.

For administrators like Tanyia Montie and Larry Robertson, it hits close to home.

"I don't really know if I can tell you what it means to me because it means everything to me," explained Montie, administrator at the Peyton Hospice House.   "I've been waiting for something like this since my grandmother died in 1988 to have a place where people can come and be comfortable during the last time of their life."

"My mother died as a hospice patient about three years ago," Robertson, executive director of HospiceCare, told WVVA.  "And as the only child living near home, my sister lives out of state, I was her caregiver. And to try to keep a job and caregiver and care, it was really difficult."

The facility provides intensive care to make sure patients are as comfortable as possible.

"This facility will offer pain and symptom management, spiritual care," Montie said.  "Sometimes it may be short-term, sometimes it may be a little longer."

Dozens of people showed up for the ribbon-cutting ceremony, including Congressman Nick Rahall. The facility is the only one of it's kind in the area. They hope to start taking patients in about two weeks.

Oceana (WVVA) Last year, the town of Oceana was launched into the national headlines after a documentary film emphasized a high rate of prescription drug abuse.
