Woman injured by debris after truck clips overpass on I-81

PULASKI COUNTY (WVVA) - A woman was seriously injured on Interstate 81 Monday after a truck a hauling a military vehicle struck an overpass, sending debris into the vehicle traveling behind it.

The incident occurred at 1:16 p.m. in Pulaski County, near the Draper exit. According to a news release from the State Police, the boom of a military construction vehicle being hauled by a flatbed tractor-trailer clipped an overpass, causing a piece of concrete to break loose and crash into a Chrysler minivan traveling behind it.

The 25-pound piece of concrete smashed through the minivan's windshield, injuring a female passenger, 46-year-old Beth Yos of Kailua, Hawaii.

The driver and victim's husband, Thomas Yos, called 911 to report the incident. He and an 8-year-old in the backseat were unharmed.

The driver of the truck, 49-year-old Ismael Acosta of High Point, N.C., was unaware of the incident, and was pulled over by state police near the 108 mile marker in Montgomery County. He was charged with an over-height violation.

The overpass is 14 feet 5 inches in height.

Beth Yos was transported to Pulaski Community Hospital for treatment of a serious, but non-life threatening injury.

The incident remains under investigation.
