Veterans host Patriot Motorcycle Ride

(WVVA) - Southern West Virginia was filled with roaring motorcycles for the eighth annual Patriot Ride on Saturday.

"We do this to honor all the veterans of McDowell, Mingo and Wyoming counties this year," explained organizer and veteran Charlie Lambert.

The ride is hosted by the Veterans of Foreign Wars post 1144. They hope to raise about $3,000 and it's all to help give back to their fallen brothers and sisters.

"We bury veterans that pass away or are killed in action,” explained Harold "Fuzz" Fairbanks. “And we do the whole military rights."

The organization does all sorts of things for the community, like talking at schools and churches, and even bridge dedications.

Bikers have to pay to ride and each year the line grows bigger and bigger.

About 100 motorcycles showed up for this ride. They traveled through three counties and about 150 miles all together.

Lambert was ecstatic about the turnout. “It just fills my heart, I'm telling you. The support we have from everyone for the veterans, it's just fantastic."

“Without the community and these other people, we couldn't do what we do," explained Fairbanks.

The ride starts in Iaeger, and the group makes four stops along their route, each town holding its own ceremony. In Welch, the town honored the men with 21 gun salute.

For Fairbanks, it's all worth it to remember the reason they served in the first place -- to protect our freedoms. "I sit on my porch a lot and I hear the sounds of freedom that means so much. You hear children playing, people coming and going. And it's all because of veterans."

So if you happen to run into a veteran, remember to thank them.
