Job cuts impact eight McDowell Co. Employees

WELCH (WVVA)-Eight McDowell County employees lose their jobs and more layoffs could be on the way.

According to former Public Relations Director Cathy Patton, the County Commission blames "overtime pay" for the Sheriff's Office as the reason for layoffs.

Patton was among the job cuts, which also included Assistant County Administrator Clif Moore, Regional Jail Coordinator Jerry Stepp, Grant/Contract Administrator Frances Hale, plus two housekeepers and two maintenance workers.

Commissioners expect the layoffs to save the county $150,000.

Sheriff Martin West says his office is under-funded. He blames mismanagement by the County Commission as the reason for the budget problems.

West says the Commission wanted him to eliminate overtime altogether starting in January, but he says that is just not possible for a police force to do. West says his office has a budget of between $750,000 and $770,000, which includes sixteen deputies, a home confinement officer, four tax office workers, and three support staff.

He says Commissioners told him there could be additional layoffs.
