Concord's Carnett Finishes Second In 800m National Championship

ALLENDALE, MI (WVVA) -- Concord's Shawnee Carnett was going to make history no matter the outcome of the 800m national championship. History has a stark and unwavering tendency to remember only winners but perhaps in this race - and maybe only this race - history won't forget second place.

Carnett finished less than a second behind Seattle Pacific's McKayla Fricker in the 2014 800m national championship. A win would have given Carnett her third in the 800 but a three-peat was not in the cards. Still, Carnett - the reigning indoor 800m champion - made sure the race had historic meaning.

The second place finish secured Carnett's sixth All-American honor in her already incredible career. She finishes as the 17th runner in Division Two history with a pair of 800m titles. She's one of twelve runners with both an indoor and outdoor national championship.
