Outgoing Tazewell Schools Superintendent releases statement on resignation

TAZEWELL (WVVA) - Outgoing Tazewell County Schools Superintendent Dr. Michaelene Meyer released the following statement, dated Tuesday, May 6, regarding her resignation.

Following is the full statement:

Last evening, the Tazewell County School Board accepted my resignation as Superintendent, which was tendered to support their desire to hire their own superintendent. It is with deep disappointment that I must leave the division, and although my tenure was short-lived, I have been productive throughout my time here and have maintained a focus on what is in the best interests of students. I am grateful for having had the opportunity to serve the community, the employees of the division, and above all the students who strive to achieve everyday within our schools. It has been both a personal and professionally rewarding experience for me.

Over the past several months, since the School Board first raised the issue of a possible early departure, it became clear that the newly constituted School Board wanted to exercise its right to select its own Superintendent. This type of decision is certainly well within its right, even, when as here, no performance issues exist. I have come to understand that this type of decision is not all that uncommon.

I am proud of the work that has been accomplished this past year through the shared efforts of leadership within the division. We have made many positive changes and it is my hope that the School Board will continue to find ways to build upon the strong initiatives already being implemented, as well as commit to support new ones that have been initiated through our work together this past year.

I will be busy between now and June 30 as there is still work I am committed to finishing. It was important to me for this announcement to be made now so that your school leaders are able to begin the process for finding my replacement. I want to be sure this transition occurs as smoothly as possible, and I have pledged my full cooperation.

The Tazewell community can take great pride in their school system. It is my hope and prayer that the citizens of the county, parents, employees, and students will continue to work with the Board to attain the goals set forth in the division’s strategic plan. A shared commitment will be needed to ensure that the county’s most precious asset – its children – will have the best possible learning environment provided everyday – within every classroom – throughout every year of their educational experience.
