TAZEWELL (WVVA) - The Tazewell County Board of Supervisors honored a special citizen Tuesday with a grand send-off as she and her family embarks on a dream trip.

Nine-year-old Ellie Spencer of Tazewell County suffers from a rare disease that weakens her connective tissue, and brings with it diminished lung capacity and a weak immune system.

Recently she and her family were given the surprise of a lifetime when the Make-a-Wish Foundation, which supports sick children like Ellie, surprised her family with a trip to Disney World.

On Tuesday, Ellie was surprised again by the Tazewell County Board of Supervisors, who wanted to send her off in style.

Ellie's dad, Jim Spencer is the Tazewell County Administrator, a job he loves, but one that often keeps him away from home.

At Tuesday's meeting, the group surprised the Spencers with some gifts of their own, including a plaque to honor Ellie and recognize the sacrifice she makes by sharing her father with the board.

"He does everything he can to take care of me. But he's gone a lot of the time," Ellie said.

"it just made a good thing to recognize her for the loss that she has for the work he does for us,” said board member Charles Stacy, “but also to send her off with a little hoorah."

Ellie says her favorite Disney movie is “Frozen,” and she hopes to meet the characters while in the Magic Kingdom.
