Wythe County woman killed in head-on crash

SMYTH COUNTY (NEWS RELEASE) -- At 7:47 a.m. Thursday (May 1, 2014), Virginia State Police Sr. Trooper R.D. Collins was called to the scene of a two-vehicle crash in Smyth County. The crash occurred on Highway 11, less than a mile from Old Tannery Road.

A 2003 Chrysler PT Cruiser was traveling south on Highway 11 when it crossed the centerline and struck head-on a 2002 Jaguar XJ8.

The driver of the PT Cruiser, Carrie L. Stewart, 51, of Rural Retreat, Va., died at the scene. Her 7-year-old grandson was flown to Bristol Regional Medical Center for treatment of serious injuries. Both Stewart and the grandson were wearing seat belts.

The driver of the Jaguar, Phillip Gullion, 51, of Atkins, Va., and his passenger, Elizabeth A. Gullion, 35, of Atkins, Va., were both flown to a nearby hospital for treatment of serious injuries. Both were wearing seat belts.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
