Snow in the Forecast for Tuesday

Posted:
WVVA (Bluefield, WV) – Yes, snow is back in the forecast. Yes, we know it’s April.

A strong cold front will bring periods of rain to the Two Virginias through Tuesday morning. Rain may be heavy at times and accompanied by thunder and occasional gusty winds. Many will see rain totals of a half inch to an inch by early Tuesday afternoon, which may cause minor flooding in poor drainage or low-lying areas.

The cold front will move through the area Tuesday morning and be followed by a significant temperature drop through the day. Temperatures for many will begin in the 50s Tuesday morning and drop into the 30s by the afternoon. Rain showers will begin mixing with and changing to snow showers as the colder air arrives.

Snow will be wet and likely melt as it hits roadways, but may stick to the grass and cars. Little to no accumulation is expected for most, but across hill tops above 3000 ft, a half inch to an inch of wet snow is possible, however unlikely.

Low pressure will be moving to our northeast Tuesday evening and simultaneously strong high pressure will be speeding in. This transition will begin to dry us out in the evening, bringing an end to snow showers and it will increase winds. Northwest winds may occasionally gust to 40-50mph Tuesday night, especially across ridge tops. This may cause spotty power outages.

As drier air rushes in, skies will clear Tuesday night into Wednesday morning and temperatures will drop into the 20s. Black ice is a possibility during this time. Wind chills Wednesday morning may dip into the teens, so make sure you have a good winter coat for the trip to work and school.

Winds lighten and the sun returns Wednesday, helping temperatures rise back to the 50s. However, frosty mornings are looking likely Thursday for most and Friday for some.
