UPDATE: Smith gets 1 year for involuntary manslaughter

LEWISBURG (WVVA) - A man convicted of involuntary manslaughter after pushing another down a flight of stairs has been sentenced to one year behind bars.

Antonio Smith was sentenced in court Wednesday morning in Greenbrier County for sentencing in the manslaughter death of Ira Harris.

Harris died in February 2012 after he was pushed down a flight of stairs by Smith during an altercation at a Lewisburg apartment. Smith was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in January 2014.

Smith will also pay a $1,000 fine.

In a news release issued Wednesday afternoon, Greenbrier County Prosecuting Attorney Patrick Via said he was pleased that Smith received the maximum sentence.

“Today brought a conclusion to the criminal proceedings against Mr. Smith, and we are pleased that the Court imposed the maximum sentence that was available,” Via said.

“While the criminal case is now completed, the family and loved ones of Ira Harris will continue to struggle with his death, and the impact of his loss upon their lives. Several family members were present for the sentencing today, and the devastation of Ira’s death upon them was evident”

Smith had initially been scheduled for sentencing last month, but failed to show. A warrant was issued for his arrest and he turned himself in to authorities shortly after.
