UPDATE: Charges, more details released in police chase

BECKLEY (WVVA) - A man arrested following a chase in Beckley Tuesday is facing multiple charges.

37-year-old Jerry Gunter faces multiple felony and misdemeanor charges including malicious wounding, fleeing from an officer causing bodily injury, fleeing from police while under the influence, obstruction and a second-offense DUI.

Tuesday's chase began on Robert C. Byrd Drive when police attempted to stop an SUV driven by Gunter for a defective brake light, according to the criminal complaint obtained by WVVA News.

While fleeing police, Gunter struck another vehicle after attempting to turn onto Piney Avenue near Wendy's. At this time an officer approached the vehicle and attempted to stop Gunter by breaking the driver's side glass on the vehicle, but Gunter was able to restart the vehicle and return to Byrd Drive.

The chase was ended a short time later near Ollie's.

Gunter also struck a Beckley Police cruiser in the process, causing an estimated $2,500 damage.

According to the criminal complaint, Gunter told police he had drank "7 or 8" Bud Light beers prior to the pursuit. Police said Gunter smelled of alcohol and exhibited slurred speech and unsteadiness.

Gunter refused to take a series of field sobriety tests.

Gunter was taken to Beckley ARH hospital to be treated for injuries following his arrest. He is currently being held at Southern Regional Jail on $75,000 bond.

Gunter's previous DUI conviction occurred in June 2005.


BECKLEY (WVVA) - Police have released the name of the man arrested following a chase in Beckley Tuesday.

Jerry Gunter faces a charge of second-offense DUI. Additional charges are pending.

A passenger in Gunter's vehicle was not charged.

At least one person was taken to a nearby hospital after the SUV being driven by Gunter hit several other vehicles. The injuries were not considered life threatening.


BECKLEY (WVVA) - A man has been arrested following a police chase in Beckley.

The chase began around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday when Beckley Police attempted to pull over an SUV. The driver refused to stop and officers gave chase.

After several minutes, the driver of the SUV ran into several cars, including a Beckley Police cruiser.

The driver was arrested on multiple charges. A passenger was also inside the vehicle. It's unclear at this time if the passenger faces any charges.

The driver's identity has not been released.
