Landslide buries part of a McDowell Co. family's home

WELCH, W. Va (WVVA)-- A family begins the clean-up process after a water main break causes a landslide into their long-time Welch home.
Jack Watson, the homeowner, tells us it happened last Friday morning, completely filling his family's back yard with water and buckling the walls of their home.

When WVVA checked in with them Monday morning, they (along with family friends) were salvaging what they could of their belongings.
"Mostly what's ruined is memories of that room," Watson said of the living room. The family will have to find a way to demolish it so crews can fit equipment up the hill to fix the slide.

Watson said they're still waiting on insurance companies to assess the damage. He and his family are still living in the home, and they don't want to have to move. He says their family is close-knit and he and his wife have lived there for more than 30 years.

"It is frustrating because there's so much to do," he said.

But Watson remains optimistic: "Crying doesn't fix anything," he said, when asked about how he plans to move on.

Part of Riverside Drive above their home remains closed in Welch.
