IAEGER (WVVA) -  Drivers can expect a smoother commute Thursday.  The road in McDowell County blocked after a rock slide last weekend, is now open.
Both lanes of C.R.1 are open.  The road was cleared by about 9:30 Wednesday night.  As a precaution, a crew patrolled the area overnight to observe the hillside and ensure stability.

That roadwork will cost an estimated $25,000.

IAEGER (WVVA) - Contractors were expected to begin work Tuesday on a rock slide that has blocked a highway in McDowell County.

An emergency purchasing request was approved to allow a contractor to handle the cleanup along County Route 1 near Iaeger, according to a news release from the West Virginia Department of Transportation.

The work is expected to cost approximately $25,000. The DOH anticipates the road being re-opened by the end of the week.

The road is accessible for emergency traffic.

IAEGER (WVVA) - Route One in McDowell County remains blocked after a weekend rock slide worsened.

The initial slide happened over the weekend between Panther and the Route 52 intersection near Iaeger. Officials say since then, the situation has gotten worse after another boulder broke away from the mountain and began to slide.

Officials expect the cleanup to take several days.

Route One is the main line of travel from the Panther area to Iaeger. The closure has disrupted school bus routes and residents' commutes to work.

Highway officials are working with contractors to determine how to best tackle the cleanup.

MCDOWELL COUNTY (WVVA) -- Roads in McDowell County are closed after rock slides.

Officials say State Route One is blocked between Route 52 and Panther.  The slide happened about a half mile from the Super Stop at the intersection of Route 52 and State Route One.

DOH has to bring their engineering team in to assess a big boulder.  Officials cannot confirm how long this will take.

There are a few detours for drivers.  If you are traveling east, go through Panther State Forest to State Route 80.  That will take you to Coon Branch or Oosley Hollow.  If you are traveling north, go from Panther to Isaban to Gilbert Creek.

Also Riverside Drive in Welch is closed, near Coney Island, not far from where the last rock slide happened.  Drivers can expect a smoother commute this morning--now that the road in mcdowell county blocked after a rockslide last weekend--is now open.

Crews spent the past several days working on the road blocked by a rockslide near panther.

Now both lanes of c-r one are open.

The road was cleared by about 9:30 last night--and as a precaution, a crew patrolled the area overnight to observe the hillside and ensure stability.

That roadwork will cost an estimated 25-thousand dollars--kevin
